One of tho recipients of a silver medal from the Carnegie horo fund today Is Now York's street cleaning commissioner, William H Edwards, who figured In tho Incidents In connection with the shooting of Mayor William J. Gaynor on the deck of tho Kaiser Wllhelm der Grosse at "Hoboken, N. J., August 9. Tho report of the commission's Investigator In-vestigator says th:it he saved indeterminate indeter-minate persons from being shot at tho hands of an assassin; that Mayor Gaynor Gay-nor having been shot in the head at closo range, Edwards threw himself on the man with tho upraised pistol and bore him to the deck on his back. "As Edwards fell on top of him, the pistol was discharged again and the bullet grazed Edwards' forearm. Others Oth-ers hurried to pinion tho man's arms, but beforo they accomplished It tho pistol was- discharged a third tlmo Edward then arrested the assallanL" Twenty-six awards In recognition of acts of heroism were made by tno Carneglo hero fund commission, sixteen six-teen bronze and ten silver medals besides be-sides cash being authorized. Nineteen of the awards wero made In rescues or attempted rescues from drowning, three from fire, two from suffocation in wells and ono each from train and shooting. In nine instances the he-ioes he-ioes lost their lives and the award is mado to inombers of the family. Among others to recolvo awards are F.
