Show ROCHESTER, K. Y Jan. 13. Mrs Edith Melber, a widow, who says she in 23 years old, of Schenectady, confessed con-fessed tonight, according to tho Rochester Roch-ester police, that in a swnmp near Albany last Friday afternoon sho gave her five-year-old son, George, carbolic car-bolic acid, from tho effects of which he died. Sho was arrested in tho New York Central railway station hero and as locked up on a charge of murder in the first degree. Sho will bo taken to Albany in the morning. Struggled for Existence. In explaining her crime, the police say, Mrs. Melber says sho has been a widow four years, during which she has had a struggle to caro for horsclf and child, and that this battle for an existence drove her to tako tho boy's life. She is an unusually attractive woman wom-an and at tho end of Dor examination was unnerved and weeping hysterically-. The police were able to raako tho arrest ar-rest this afternoon by keeping watch In the station over a trunk that had been checked from Schenectady, and was believed to bo the property of Mrs. Melber. When tho woman called to got it, soon after 5 o'clock, she was arrested Gave Poison In a Drink. AVhen she made her confession, according ac-cording to tho police, she said sho gave the child acid when he asked for a drink. Mrs. Melber says that sho left Schenectady yeBlcrday afternoon and came to Rochester to look for work. She stayed in tho rooms of tho Young Women's Christinn association last night and says she was looking look-ing for work today. In tho woman's trunk wore her own clothing and that of tho littlo boy. |
