Show j THE POWER OF LEADERSHIP j Young people are often told that they should try to acquire the power of leadership. Colby at Waterville, Me., recently held an l institute under the auspice of the Women's Student league, on j "The technique of leadership". It had special reference to leader-I leader-I ship in organizations. It is a good subject, that can well be considered con-sidered in sc'hools and colleges. Many people try to exercise such leadership, but, fail for some , reason. Perhaps they make blunders when they try to become leaders, and get so laughed at that they subside in silence, and let someone else do the leading. If you attend some public meeting called for action on some ; subject, you will note that relatively few veople have any de finite idea of what should be done. The leading is usually done j by a few people. There may be more who have ideas, but whose suggestions when offered do not seem practical. It is a wonderful gift when people are able to speak up i quickly and say what is the appropriate thing to do. Those who can do that soon get elected to positions of leadership. Aperson may have excellent intelligence, yet when faced with j some problem in the organization to which he belongs, he can't 1 see at once what is the correct thing to do. One way to acquire such leadership is to be willing to do any kind of work needed in such an organization. If a person has worked on some committee i he gets an idea of how things should be done, and is in a position to make good suggestions. ' ', Leadership is necessary for success in business. A person who : is fair in all his aealings, and can see how- to treat everyone justly - , will be more likely to make a success as a foreman, superinten-), superinten-), dent, or manager. |
