The department of agriculture and the state agricultural experiment experi-ment station should give greater attention to research in the home garden field, and to the widest dissemination dis-semination of information based on their work. 5. The department of agriculture agricul-ture should, continue and strengthen strength-en its work in nutrition, and home food preservation; giving- special emphasis to ' the contributions that can be made by home ! gardens. 6. The United States office of education, the state departments of education, school officials, and all you tH organizations should place greater emphasis on gardening gard-ening as a school and home activity ac-tivity to encourage the building of better American citizens. Garden Program To be Extended A broad program of home gardening gar-dening for 1945 to promote health, economy, attractive surroundings, sur-roundings, and recreation was recommended re-commended recently to the secretary se-cretary of agriculture and the administrator of the war food administration ad-ministration by the national advisory ad-visory garden committee, the Utah extension service said today. As an aid to millions of town and city families who will want to continue gardening, the committee com-mittee recommended employment of urban extension agents trained train-ed in horticulture. Following are other recommendations recommen-dations of the committee: 1. The department of agriculture agricul-ture should give greater emphasis than ever before to the encour- agemcnt of home gardening in both non-rural and rural areas. This program should Include a specific project in the extension service, both state and federal, on home gardening in its broadest phases, including the growing of ; lowers and other ornamental plants, as well as fruits -and vegetables. The program should also include provisions for the retention of State and local - -garden committees to advise and assist the extension service. 2. To aid urban and surburdan families in the several phases of : gardening, it is recommended that the department of urban extension exten-sion services cooperate with cities cit-ies and counties in the employment employ-ment of urban extension agents trained in horticulture. 3. The department of agriculture agricul-ture should cooperate in every way possible with other agencies in encouraging gardening as an aid to the rehabilitation of re-turned re-turned war veterans and to en- |
