Show Pilot Launches Liberation Fete The description of how a Lo. gan P-38 pilot touched off a spontaneous liberation celebration in a small French village recently, was narrated Wednesday night on an overseas broadcast by Ted Malone and released through the Blue network. Lieutenant Clair Baugh, 23, son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank H. Baugh Jr., 46 South Fourtnh West, was the subject of Mr. Malone's broadcast. "He was one of three P-38 pilots who were getting a tail ride back to London from Paris on a big transport plane when I interviewed them," Malone said. "The group had just completed several bombing and straffing missions mis-sions of nazi installations from Cherbourg to the Seigfried line and were to receive a well-earned furlough. "Lieutenant Baugh told me how he and other pilots in his group became lost one day over France and zoomed down on a small field to 'find their way home'. Tha planes were the first allied craft to land after the Germans had left and it touched off a liberation libera-tion celebration. "They wouldn't let us leave without a parade and the entire town turned out, lined the street, and smothered us with typical French kisses," he coninued. "Of course, the French people kiss by just brushing cheeks against yours, but it was a pleasant experience." |
