Show Smithfield Pilot Blasts Japs A Smithfield naval pilot, Lieutenant Lieu-tenant (j.g.) Mervin E. Noble, was top-scoring man when seven hellcats of Fighting 2, navy carrier-based squadron, attacked a flight of 35 enemy planes over Iwo Jima in the Kaaans, 600 miles from Tokyo on June 15. The squadron shot down 17 of the enemy craft without loss or injury to themselves, and Lieutenant Lieu-tenant Noble destroyed three and was credited with a "probable" and "possible." Lieutenant Noble enlisted for aviation training in January 1942 and received his commission commis-sion at Corpus Christi, Tex. He is a graduate of North Cache high school, Richmond, and Utah State Agricultural college. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Ira E. Noble, Jr. |
