Show Draft Lavs 4th Year Finds 65,000 Utahns in Uniform j the American army in comparison with hordes of Asiatics swiftly overrunning vital Pacific bases, draft registration was upped to 45-year olds in February, 1942, and extended downward to include 18-year-old-men in June 1942. Sixty-five thousand Utah men Monday observed the four-year anniversary an-niversary of their registration under un-der the national selective service act. "Hazily aware the country should "prepare for defense." yet more than half ' convinced the United States could avoid the European holocaust, men 21 to 35 registered with local draft boards throughout the state October 16, 1940. A month and two days later, Utah's first group for induction was sworn in. Utah's quota called for 64 men, recalled Col. H. Arnold Ar-nold Rich, Utah selective service director, but with characteristic western generosity, Utah delivered 67. ' ; By August, 1941, a sizable proportion pro-portion of young American men had been separated from their homes, and subjected to the toughening tough-ening up process of military training; train-ing; but despite casualties in England, Eng-land, Europe and China, war still seemed distent from American shores and congress authorized release of all men over 28.
