Kickoffat 2:30 p. m. in Farmer Stadium Here By HARRY RONNELL, member USAC public relations staff Football collegiate brand returns to the Utah Aggie stadium Saturday after a year's absence when Coach Dick Romney's young but spirited team will open their 1944 season against the Pocatello, Idaho marine, "Devil Dogs." The kickoff is set for 2:30 p. m. in the Aggie stadium: Coach Romney has moulded a classy squad from the crew of 40 players out for the sport. Included are two lettermen, plenty of freshmen and a sophomore nv twn who have never clayed the game before. x But the squad is much better's than Coach Romney and Aggie fans anticipated or even dreamed possible last August. The young eleven have the right spirit and snap and enthusiasm to put on a good show any time they take to the gridiron and before the battle with Utah rolls around on Thanksgiving, they'll be a capable aggregation. Standout backfield star for the season promises to be Ernie Groll, former Logan high . all-stater. Groll is playing left halfback and is a powerful and fast ball toter and a good passer. With him in the backfield will be Nick Caputo and Cliff Hoopiana, a rugged pair of West high boys who are looking better than ever before. Caputo in particular has been impressive impres-sive with his ball running at fullback. Captain Burns Crookston, the veteran on the team, will be at the quarterback post, will do most of the passing and kicking and some of the ball running. He is expected to be the . mainstay of the backfield. George Comia of West is another classy young quarterback who is certain to see a lot of action and Wesley Blood, who has never played the game before, is developing fast int0 a standout back. ' Bert Hardy and Blaine (Spike) Heywood are another an-other pair of backs that are being be-ing groomed for a lot of action. The .return of Jarrin' 'John Putnick, who was discharged from the army just last week, will strengthen the end department considerably, but for the opening game he will be a reserve, with COACH ROMNJil I I weighed, five pounds in the back-field back-field and eight pound on the line. The Devil Dog line weighs 180 pounds and their backfield 174, compared to 175 and 167. for the Aggies. Admission for the game will be 50 cents general admission; 50 cents for service men; 25 cents for high school stu&ents with activity ac-tivity cards and 10 cents for knothole knot-hole club. dakis oh the "wings. The Aggies were solid at tackles until Lane Nalder, . rough and rugged Davis ace, broke his hand and Al Price, former Box Elder high star, dropped out to enter the navy. Marv Abrams, former all-stater from South Cache, who reported Monday will fill up one of the tackle spots along with Lyle Hale, a husky boy who used to be at Hyoming. Udell Wankier and Howard Hansen, Han-sen, two freshmen, will start at guards with La Von Porter of Preston at center. There are many capable reserves to back them up and battle them for regular assignments. as-signments. Meanwhile the Ags received their first dope on the Devil Dog team, which is coached by Doyle Penton, who also plays left halfback. half-back. The athletic officer is Lieutenant Lieu-tenant A. B. Rackerby of the Pocatello Po-catello naval ordance plant and the team is composed of marines, who have seen action in the southwest Pacific and seven navy men stationed at the plant. Joe Wujciki, former semi-pro player has been named captain for the season and will direct field play from his left guard post. Another standout is Robert Sarkisan, 215. pound tackle who played at San Jose, Cal., State. The remainder of the starting lineup will include John Cous-ans, Cous-ans, center; Thomas Peterson, in the other guard slot; David Max-w-ell opposite Sarkisan; Elmer Beatty and Wesley Wimblery, end; Raymond Dunkelberger, William McCormick and Walter Goldback, in the backfield with Penton. Mc-Mormick Mc-Mormick and Goldback are expected ex-pected to provide plenty of trouble trou-ble for the Farmers as they both weigh in the neighborhood of 200 pounds.
