Show AGENT ADVISES AGAINST PANIC HOG MARKETING Feed Shortage Fears Responsible Mr. Hunsaker advised growers against producing hogs too .large, declaring that hogs are marketed most economically at from 180 to 200 pounds. ' Reporting "panic slaughter'' --jof hogs in some sections of northern north-ern Utah, . Lloyd Hunsaker, Cache 1 county agricultural- agent, today declared that the present price relationships between feed and finished pork enables hog producers pro-ducers to market pork at a profit, especially if they develop rations which are as inexpensive l:as possible. ' , ,! Higher priced feeds and 9 a smaller amount of protein supplement sup-plement available this fall are causing some hog producers to market large numbers of hogs as weaners and small feeders, Mr. Hunsaker reported. Fears of feed shortages have prompted some producers to sacrifice small pigs at unusually small prices, though the hogs might have been finished finish-ed for market at a profit, he declared. ' With grain, selling at $2 and : $2.25 per hundred, good alfalfa hay, some whey and protein supplement sup-plement available, and with plenty plen-ty of precipitated lime on hand in Cache county, he said, hogs apparently could be raised and sold at a profit with a government govern-ment support price set at Chicago Chi-cago of $13.75 per hundred. Mr. Hunsaker announced an economical but satisfactory feeding feed-ing schedule developed for hogs by Dr. I. F. Edwards, assistant professor of animal husbandry at Utah State Agricultural college, as follows: I For hogs under 100 pounds 85 per cent grain, 10 per cent protein supplement, 5 per eent '. good quality ground alfalfa hay, ' with one-fourth to one-third pounds of salt per 100 pounds and all lime animals will eat from , a box. Over 100 pounds 85 per j cent grain, 7 per cent protein supplement, 10 per cent alfalfa, 1 wiht salt and lime. Average daily feed requirements are 2.7 pounds for 50 pound hogs, 4.8 pounds for 100 pound hogs, 6.3 pounds for 150 pound hogs, and 7.2 pounds for 200 pound hogs. |
