Show Fresh Vegetables Js Aim of Planning Group Fresh vegetables for every family fam-ily in Cache County for 1942 was the recommendation of the fruit and vegetable planning committee .at their meeting Monday afternoon after-noon at which Wm. R. Zollingr, . of Providence, was chairman. It is , assumed that tomatoes, peas, beans, and probably many other canned vegetables will be shipped to our allies, therefore, it will be v necessary for people of Cache County to produce their own vegetables in their own gardens. A fresh supply during the growing grow-ing season as well as some to can and to store for winter was .recommended. A lot of vegetables can be grown , on a small piece of ground if it is -well manured before planting. It was suggested that commercial iertilizer may be applied to stim-ulate stim-ulate early growth, irrigation should be at least once a week, certified seed was recommended, and it was suggested that gardens - be kept free from, .wr-sds. At' a .later date a list of the best varieties var-ieties of vegetables for home gardens gar-dens will be published in the newspaper from which gardeners may select the varieties of seed they want to buy. In connection with the production produc-tion of fruits and vegetables it was thought that the labor problem pro-blem is going to be serious and the acreage that will be ' planted -will be governed to a . ..oprjta.in. extent ex-tent by the available ilajfcor to ; handle these crops. -' A survey, -will I be made to determine all- available labor, male and female, and it is hoped that all men and women, boys, and girls, who are not otherwise other-wise engaged will be registered at the local employment office so their services may be made avail- V able in production and harvesting of crops this year. It is our patriotic pat-riotic duty, according to the committee, com-mittee, for every citizen, man, woman, wo-man, and child, to do their utmost ut-most to help produce and harvest crops for our own needs, our army, and the people of the democracies. dem-ocracies. Production of raspberries, strawberries, straw-berries, cherries, and apples was discussed by the committee. The .prospects for a better market for berries, both as fresh and for freezing, is promising. Old patches patch-es of worthless raspberries should be pulled out, . the committee suggests, sug-gests, also that growers produce some of the better varieties such as the Cuthbert, Newburgh, and Taylor. Both in respberries and strawberries there is need for an increase in acreage as well as in quantity and quality of fruit which can be brought about by proper cultural methods, particularly partic-ularly fertilization and the proper use of irrigation water. There is an opportunity to increase the production of pie cherries in Cache County. In the case of ap- Pies, it was suggested that every effort be made to produce a better quality through pruning, spraying, thinning, fertilizing, and irrigation. |
