Show Poultrymen of County Hold Planning Meet Indications are that poultry and turkey producers in Cache County will exceed in numbers of birds the requirements set by the government gov-ernment in the defense program, acording to William Worley, chairman chair-man of the county poultry planning plan-ning committee. j In the case of poultry, iiv planning plan-ning committee, at their meeting Tuesday, recommended that the commercial producers maintain flocks of 2,000 to 3,000 birds and that they keep their pens full but not over-crowded. Producers are advised to step their production up by using balanced rations, keeping clean dry litter in the coops, and providing proper ventilation, ven-tilation, so as to keep the birds in a healthy vigorous condition. For farm flocks, the committee recommended dual-purpose chickens, chick-ens, which are represented in the Rhode Island Reds or Plymouth Rocks, of 50 to 100 birds per farm to provide poultry meat and eggs for the family to reduce the cost of living and help maintain the health of the family. The purchase of Utah chicks is recommended and that producers buy the best because they are the cheapest in the long run; also that orders be placed early to secure se-cure baby chicks in March and April as they will give the best results on the whole. ;. In the commercial ilocks it is suggested that one nestba..'pr05!ld'-ed nestba..'pr05!ld'-ed for every six laying' hens, 'that; six inches of space be provided for roosting, and that the floor space should be ample so as not to overcrowd, three square feet per bird. As to turkeys, indications are that the number in Cache County will be increased . but the committee commit-tee calls to the attention of producers pro-ducers that the government is not guaranteeing any price on turkeys and there may be a possibility of overdoing this business for. 1942. Stress was placed on the handling handl-ing of eggs on the farm. They should be gathered at least three times a day and taken immediately immediate-ly to a cool damp room to be held until . they, are sent to the association. asso-ciation. The handling of eggs in stores was discussed and it was pointed out that the egg drys out rapidly when it is taken from the association plant and kept too long in a dry warm room. Therefore, There-fore, in the problem of handling eggs in the store, they should be kept cool and turned to the consumer con-sumer frequently. |
