Show U. S. Marines Thrive on Good Chow The old adage, "an army marches march-es on its stomach," probably contains con-tains more truth than any of the other famous proverbs. It is applicable to the Marine Corps also. Sea-soldiers all over the globe have, at times, faced tasks, climates and conditions that were almost unbearable; but managed to overlook the disagreeable aspects as-pects they faced because at meal times they were able to sit down to what is known as "good chow". Many commanding officers of far-off far-off post, where conditions are fax from i;:eal. realize this and personally per-sonally see to it that the cook's every effort is his best. After a marine leaves the service ser-vice one finds that he is usually particular about what he eats, as j a recent, bride found out and wrote the Corps Headquarters the following: fol-lowing: "Have you a two week menu available for luncheons? I married an ex-marine and can't seem to plan a meal that will come up to the Marine standard, so I'm told. Thank you." The writer was supplied with some copies of Marine Corps menus. Realizing the effect that good chow has on morale, the Corps has recently placed an order for 250,000 cans of "Type C" emergency emer-gency ration. This ration consists of six cans weighing a total of three pounds, nine ounces a supply sup-ply of food for . one day. Five whole wheat biscuits with a flavor similar to graham crackers are contained in each unit. There is enough soluble coffee to make a pint of the beverage, three cubes of sugar and an ounce of high calorie chocolate. There are also cans of meat and vegetable stew, meat and vegetable hash and meat and beans. With this type of ration, each man will be able to carry a day's supply of good wholesome "chow", and in the event he becomes separated from his regular outfit, will be supplied sup-plied with a day's supply of food. Ambitious young Americans have the opportunity of serving with this famous organization either for four j-ears or for the duration dura-tion of the national emergency. Academic and vocational training is available to all members through the Marine Corps Institute and the Marine Corps Schools.
