Show Republican Communication. Mr, Editor please publish the following: follow-ing: REPTBLICaN. la your last issue you were rather severe on the pamphlet ''Nuggets of Trnth" and although you tab doubt were sincere and honest in your criticism it is hardly proper for an independent paper to so censure either parly, but of course I do not mean that you should hold your tongue. There is one. point however that I would like to illustrate. A hituey'a "History of Utah" says, referring refer-ring to an election ia Illinois: "The Mormons, however or the majority major-ity of them, stood by their democratic principles and cast their ballots lor Mr. Hoge. While a majority, including the prophet, being whlgs voted for Mr. Walker. Hoge was elected by a majority major-ity in the district of 455 votes." Now this in my opinion leaves no possible doubt as to the prophets politics. Now as to the meaning of "Free Trade and Sailors rights." "By 'Free Trade' we mean freedom to send onr merchant ships to what ports we please; by 'Sailors' Rights,' we mean the protection of American seamen against seizure by the British." .Now your quotation- from Joseph Smith about free trade does not mean anything. Joseph Smith was a republican republi-can and hisiory proves it. I would ad vise all democrats to study the polities' History of the United States, aud especially es-pecially the free trade theory and the practical workings of protection, and if they do that I venture to say there will be two republicans where there is one now. The McKinley bill has benefited this country in more ways than one, as j can be proven by Peck's report. I would go into details but I fear that I have already taken to much space. In my opinion home industry should be fostered here in Utah and should be protected-The protected-The democrats seem to think that free lead, free wool, and tree everything would be of benefit to this country, but then as they will never get a chance to try it we need have no fear in that regard. |
