Show w SOLDIER'S MEMORIAL For the purpose of erecting in Salt Lake City a memorial building honor-ng honor-ng the memory of Utah men and wo-.nen wo-.nen who have served with the Colors In all wars, the State Legislature will be asked during the present session 'o authorize a bond issue of about 100,000 to be added to the $100,000 already provided by Salt Lake City, which will insure the erection of a building costing approximately half a million dollars. If favorable action is secured it is proposed to build a monumental structure housing an auditorium for public functions, the Armory of the National Guard of Utah, offices for the personnel of the National Guard stationed in Salt Lake City and separate sepa-rate rooms devoted to meeting places for the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Disabled American Veterans of the World war, Marine Corps League, Spanish War Veterans, Graivl Army of the Republic, Indian War Veterans Association and auxiliaries auxi-liaries of these organizations. In addition ad-dition there would be provided rooms for exhibition of war trophies, historical histor-ical military records and other valuable valu-able items. Mayor C. Clarence Neslen of Salt Lake started the balj rolling two or three weeks ago with the appointment of a large advisory committee in Salt Lake and the organization has expanded ex-panded into subcommittees under the general direction of former Governor Charles R. Mabey as permanent chairman. chair-man. It will be pointed out to the Legislature Legis-lature by sponsors of the bond issue measure that the State of Utah is the only one in the Union which has done nothing toward providing a memorial to its soldiers, sailors, marines and other service veterans of all wars. While a State Memorial Commission was appointed seven or eight years ago by Governor Mabey, no definite stops have been taken by the State toward financing the memorial. Salt Lake City, under the administration of Mayor W. Mont Ferry, voted $100,-000 $100,-000 for the city's share of a memorial building. With this fund as a nucele-'is, nucele-'is, the committee will go before the Legislature in an effort to obtain the balance from the State on a bond issue. |
