Show Geographic Division "Piedmont Tlaln" Is a name used In the physiography of the United States to designate that part of the Atlantic coast r'ain which lies between the Appalachian Ap-palachian highland and the low coast-ll coast-ll plain proper. It Is distinguished 'rora the latter topographically by be-ng be-ng more rugged and eroded with eej.vr river valleys nnd geologically y consisting of much older nnd hard-.r hard-.r roek strata. The change, from the hard to the soft nnd recent formation Is marked by a definite line of escarpments escarp-ments over which nearly nil the Atlantic At-lantic rivers fall In rnpnLs or cataracts, nnd the line is known ns the "fall line." The IMedmont plain is loss defined de-fined in New England than in the southern states. It Is narrowest and also approaches closest to the sea In New York end broadens southward, being about 3'0 miles wide In North Carolina. |
