Two Warships Leave San Diego Harbor Har-bor for Southern Waters in Response Re-sponse to Earnest Request of Americans for Protection. Washington. It is announced that American government representatives in Mexico have asked for the dispatch of wurships to that country to protect pro-tect American citizens and their property, prop-erty, and that the United States destroyers de-stroyers Salem and McCawley have left San Diego harbor for Mazatlan, Mexico. The requests came from Mazatlan and Topolobampo, on the ll'acitic coast, and Frontera on the Gulf coast. The Atlantic fleet is at Guantanamo bay in readiness should it become necessary nec-essary to send warships to the Atlantic Atlan-tic coast in Mexico. Advices indicate that 350 Mexican federal troops have arrived at Mazatlan, Mazat-lan, but there have been no reports of disturbances there, or at the other two ports. At the Mexican embassay it was said that the situation was such that there would seem to be no need of American Ameri-can vessels being sent to that section. sec-tion. Preparations are also being made, it is learned, to send additional cruisers and destroyers to both the east and west coasts if the safety of Americans becomes further endangered. No warning warn-ing to all Americans to leave Mexico as was issued by the administration in 1913 an! 1915 has been considered up to date hy the president and his advisers, it is stated. The state department received telegrams tele-grams from the American consuls at Mazatlan and Topolobampa in Sinaloa on the west coast, stating that Americans Ameri-cans at those ports and in the immediate imme-diate vicinity are in great danger from violence incidental to the strife of the warring factions and urging that warships war-ships be sent for their protection. It also was officially reported to the state department that there is great alarm among Americans throughout the Tuxpam oil region on the east coast. Secretary Daniels said that the Sacramento is now at Tampieo and in the absence of a specific request from the state department for increased protection pro-tection on the east coast, he took no steps to send reinforcements. |
