Show Excitement Extraordinary Man and Woman Arrested ; Mysteriously Released by Breaking of Jail Padlock The present week has been a strenuous stren-uous one so far as exciting happenings are concerned. Two burglaries, case of shoplifting, runaway accident, sensational arrest and more sensational jail-delivery; pretty good, thank you for one week. Tuesday evening Joe Hamilton and wife of Newhouse were arrested by Officers Hedges and Baxter, the man charged with interferriug with an officer and the woman alleged to be drunk and disorderly. From information gained from the officers, it appears that while Officers Hedges and Baxter were standing at the depot, Tuesday evening, Hamilton and his wife who were strolling around the depot, began to make slurring remarks re-marks to Hedges, evidently trying to annoy and exasperate him. Itisstated that they boasted of running a house of ill fame in Newhouse, derided the "moral wave" which had, on a former occasion, according to report, involved the man in difficulties with the law. and generally made themselves obnoxious. Officer Hedges, not caring to enter into controversy with the pair, retired so it is stated, into the waiting room, where he and Marshall Baxter stood looking out of the window. A little later, says Mr. Hedges, Hamilton and wife, accompanied by oue or two well-known local residents, strolled by the window and Hamilton and wife resumed their taunting of Hedgds, using, the officer states, the most vile and indecent language imaginable. Believing that peace and order were being violated, Officers Baxter aud Hedges placed the pair under arrest, Hamilton trying to interfere with the officer who was arresting his wife. The man and woman were locked up and now comes the interesting interest-ing part of the story. Sometime between be-tween 12:45 a.m. and morning, Wednesday, Wednes-day, the jail lock was broken by outside out-side parties and the prisoners released. A guest at the Milford Hotel is said to have told the officers that he had seen some one working at the jail door, but could not identify the parties. Neighbors also heard the pounding but paid little or no attention Do it. The officers state that, upon discovering dis-covering the escape, they applied fora warrant for the fugitives on a charge of escaping from jail, but allege that the justice declined to issue the warrants. The local justice avers that the refusal re-fusal was made through a misunderstanding misunder-standing of the nature of the charge upon which the warrant was asked. Thursday, Hamilton was arrested by Officer Hedges in Milford, and taken to Beaver, from which point a warrant was issued. Or course, speculation is rife as to the identity of the friends who helped Hamilton and his wife escape es-cape from the local jail. It is hinted that certain well-known citizens, while not actually breaking the lock, connived con-nived in the release. So far, tbiB is only rumor. It iB said Hamilton has been a thorn in the side of county officers for years for alleged law violations, but through aid of friends and by various dodges, has escaped punishment. 5- |
