Show SITUATION MS seen at the jees Union (lock 'Jards Los Angeles Union Stock Yards, March 26 In the face of a country wide hue and cry over the shortage short-age of meats, supplies of cattle the past week at the Los Ar.goles Union Stock yards increased while prices for beef on the hoof , sought softer ground. At twelve major markets total receipts of cattle gained about 18,000 head while the increase over the corr.-s- . ponding week a year ago was ap-pioximately ap-pioximately 42,000. At the I.os .-'.ngeles Union Stock yards arrivals oi' f!00 head w.-re about 700 over the preceding week and nearly double t:u 4900 available avai-lable a year ago. The run was well freighted with beef, the quota of steers being about the largest of the year. Buyers, with high cost figures on their beef droves ii: mind, saw an opportunity to do a little evening up and were gen-eially gen-eially playing for a cheaper set of prices. The net result was more oi less draggy trade all along the line with final prices 25c to 50c lower on, the general run cf steers, cows, heifers and calves. Bulls and some of the upper grade heifers heif-ers indicated comparatively little change. On the other hand, there were extremes on common steeis and dairy type cows late' that possibly pos-sibly showed more than 50c loss 'compared with the previous week. Action on common steers was especially slow after mid-week. Best fed steers turned at $16.75 to $17.25. A small lot of outstanding out-standing 840 pound northern heifeis reached $16.25, a new high for the season. Odd cows sold up to S14.50 and a few load lots of cows brought S13.50 to $14. A j few best bulls sold at $14 to j S14.25, bulk common to medium bolognas bringing $11.50 to $13.50. Odd lots of choice vealers touched SI 7 but comparatively few calves got above the $16 mark. Fleshy feeder steers ranged to $15 with $13.50 to $14.50 taking other useful use-ful feeders. A few best yearling stockers and stock calves brought $14 to $14.50. Meager supplies of hogs were cleared up during the week at full j ceiling prices. Top remained at $15.75 with the price absorbing most butchers 160 pounds and up. Sows held at $15 and feeder pigs commanded $20 to $21 for the more desirable descriptions. Sheep and lambs continued scarce with prices on a firm basis. Good wooled lambs were quotable to $10.50 and good wooled slaughter slaugh-ter ewes to $8.50. |
