With General Rommel's hardened tank fighters pressing westward to Sbeitle (1) and Feriana (3) from the Maknassy region (2), American troops were forced to re-form in the Tunisian hills to the north. The Allied forward base at Gafsa (4) had been abandoned earlier. The retirement from Gafsa was not completely complete-ly unexpected. |
