Show Taxis Replace Oltl Gharries as Vehicles in Holy City The last of Jerusalem's famous fleet of ramshackle open horse drawn cabs has been relegated to the Junk liea p. In their place modern taxlcabs will convey the citizens of Jerusalem anil visitors up and down the precipitous slopes of the Holy City. Practically every visitor to Jerusalem Jeru-salem used to take at least one drive in one of these horse cahs, or "gharries." "ghar-ries." Cnfortunately for the cab drivers, however, the steep city streets recently re-cently were asphalted for the benefit of automobile traffic. As a result the cab horses continually slipped and fell. Th Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals intervened nnd made representations to the government govern-ment resulting in the withdrawal of horse drawn cabs from the streets. |
