" ff j Dr. Joseph Tiso, left, premier of the new "independent" nation of Slovakia, whose demand for Slovakian autonomy in defiance of Dr. Emil Hacha, right, president of the Czcchoslovakian republic, precipitated the 20-year-old democracy's destruction. Supported by Reichsfuchrer Adolf Hitler of Germany, Dr. Tiso established estab-lished an independent Slovakia. Meanwhile the easternmost Czech province, Rulhenia (Carpatho-Ukraine) was overrun by Hungarian, Rumanian and Polish soldiers, each seeking their share of spoils. The central Prague government, left with only Bohemia and Moravia, was subdued under Hitler's thumb. |
