Show I Photographers Follow Principles of 'Old Masters' Modern portrait photography, with all the aids of mechanical development, develop-ment, must still rely on the lessons taught by keen study of the portraits por-traits of the old masters, according accord-ing to Thelner Hoover, lecturer in photography at the U. of California. "A good photographer wants to portray an individual's personality as well as the natural contours of his face, and his technique must have to do with the soul characteristic! characteris-tic! as well as facial expression. , For this reason, a photographer may be good at scenic photography and I fail at portraiture. A study of the i compositional and lighting arrange- I ments in the portraits of the old masters is of tremendous aid, because be-cause in periods when art composl- tion was being developed, they set ' themselves up with compositional ! trends that are still applicable to- ' day. For Instance, photographers still use what is known as 'Rem- brandt's lighting,' " Hoover said. |
