Show fuVESTOC SITUATION m m -os seen at the Lostuqeks Union ftock IjarJs Los Angeles Union Stock Yards, August 10 Hog prices have fluctuated fluc-tuated during the past week as buyers are attempting to bring hog prices more nearly in line with ceiling prices on pork cuts and lard. However, with the great demand for pork, the market has a buoyancy which seems to defy efforts of buyers to hold values I in line. Early last week, hog mar- kets the country over were unevenly un-evenly lower, but on succeeding days prices improved until most of the declines were regained. However, last Friday, prices were lower ag-ain and the closing top at the Los Angeles. Union Stock yards was $15.35 a cwt., or about 15c a cwt, lower than the highest quoted price the day previous. It seems likely that during the next few weeks, receipts of hogs v,ill increase as the effect of the recoid spring pig farrowing is felt. Transportation agencies, packers, commission men and government gov-ernment agencies are urging hog feeders to "spread out" the full marketing season as much as possible pos-sible in order that the record numbers of market hogs can be transported and processed. Reports Re-ports from Washington indicate that government buying of pork and lard has been reduced, temporarily, tempo-rarily, probably until the big fall run begins to move to market. Cattle prices are holding on :i stable basis, with some strength noted on cows and the better grades of steers. Strictly good, fed steers topped last week at th? Los Angeles market at $13.65, and short-fed steers are selling at $11.50 to $12.75 a cwt. Cows aiv (Continued on last pavre) LIVESTOCK NOTES (Continued from first page) in good demand and most of the common and medium grades of range cows are eligible to $8.50 to $10, with strictly good range cows up to $10.50. A good many dairy cows are being marketed, fleshy dairy types selling at $8 to $9.25 and up to $9.50 to $11, and some heavy bulls were sold as high as $11.25 and $11.50 a cwt. Native vealers are active at $12.50 to $14.50 for the bulk, choice grades up to $15.25. The broad1 demand for fat lambs on tih Los Angeles market was emphasized last week when the largest shipment of the year, some 14 decks of full wooled lambs from Mendocino county, California, brought $14.50 a cwt. Several packers were included among the buyers, indicating that all of the Los Angeles packers are looking towards the central market mar-ket for supplies. |
