Show New Flood Threats In Tuesday Storm With cleaning-up from the August Aug-ust 5 flooding of the business district dis-trict barely completed, it appeared for awhile Tuesday evening that the damage of the week previous would be equalled or exceeded. The storm which hung over the town that evening resulted in a downpour which has been estimated estimat-ed to have been twice as much as the .74 of an inch of rainfall recorded re-corded on the 6th. This time, to add to the confusion, the electric power lines went out in the vicinity vi-cinity of Cherry creek, between Milford and Beaver, and both Mil. ford and Minersville wei'e without lights or power, until about 11 o'clock o'-clock Wednesday forenoon. Telluride Power company officials offi-cials had 12 to 14 men out patrolling pa-trolling the lines all night but it was not until after daylight that the trouble was discovered. Not for several years has there been a lightning display to equal that of Tuesday and a switch on the 44,0000 line (between Milford and Beaver had been burned out in addition to a 6600-volt switch at the lower Beaver river plant. A comparatively light storm hit Milford shortly after 8 o'clock in the evening, following several hours of high humidity, the swing-around swing-around to the lower benchland to the west. Here the rain and lightning light-ning seemed to be concentrated for about half an hour, following which the storm . took another swing and settled over the town for the heaviest sustained downpour down-pour in many years. It was only a few minutes until un-til all streets and low spots coin-ing coin-ing off the bench land in the west part of town were running small rivers into town and that part of Main street between The News office and almost to Center street, resembled a lake. The side-walks were submerged at some points, permitting water again to seep into in-to the store building of Mrs. V. M. Palmer, though not in the quantity quan-tity of the previous storm. The yards and lawns of several people, especially in the northeast part of town, were overrun by water and mud. hut little or no permanent harm was done, j Fortunately for the community, this storm was pretty much a local lo-cal storm though it was feared for ! a time that it might be followed ' by a flood from the west hills. ', Had there been a downpour some ' disiir.ee out west on a par with I that in town, it is likely all past floods would have been surpassed in the amount of damage done. |
