Show MORE THAN SKIN DEEP They say beauty is only skin deep. Perhaps that is so. But much of it comes from mines hundreds of feet deep in the earth. Fashion models and American women generally would be surprised to leani of some of the weird chemical tricks that contribute to their breathtaking- appearance. Most of these chemical tricks use coal. Nearly all textile dyes are derived from coal. Dozens of chemicals and resins obtained from coal are needed to process or finish fabrics. From coal comes plastics for dress buttons, ornaments, shoe heels. Nylons Ny-lons are made of coal, air and water! "Accessories to match" also owe much to coal ; colors for lipstick and nail poish ; scents for perfumes; plastics for costume jewelry; handbag frames, compacts altogether, more than 200,000 useful products pro-ducts depend on coal and many of them! are used to glorify American women. Here is an example of how the standard of existence which we accept as normal is actually a miracle, a miracle supported by an intricate industrial system requiring millions mil-lions of persons to keep it running. Few of us realize that the slightest unbalance in this system does far more than deprive de-prive people of jobs. When vital industries such as coal are unable to operate smoothly and efficiently, the miracle begins be-gins to evaporate. This is why every one of us has so great a stake in helping help-ing to do what we can to keep industry running smoothly. Every one of us wants to see the miracle of America existence exis-tence perpetuated forever. |
