I very materially. While there wa I an undercurrent of weakness in I the cattle market opening days of the period with extremes as much as 25c off, values firmed before the close, leaving the general price basis virtually unchanged. The holiday cut into receipts, total supplies sup-plies falling well below figures for the preceding week and indicating a slight decrease compared with the corresponding period a year ago. I At the Los Angeles Union Stock Yard beef steers comprised a fair percentage of the crop, though she stock was by no means scarce. Quality ran to extremes. A small lot of 1332-pound Arizona-fed steers scored a top of $18, and another odd lot of 11C '.'-pound California Cali-fornia brought $17.25. A load of good to choice 982 pound steers sold at $17 and several loads moved around $16.75 and $16.80. Medium to good fed classes turned largely at $15 to $16.75 with common com-mon to medium grades at $12 to $14.50, including quite a few Mexican Mexi-can grassers at $13 to $13.75. A few very common steers sold down to $11 and below. Medium to good heifers bulked at $14.50 to $15.25, with a few loads around $15.50. Common grades drifted down to $12 and under. Medium to good grass cows largely $11.50 to $13.50, with a few up to $14 or better. Cutters I ranged down to $8.50 and canners t $7 and below. Odd head of beef type bulls ranged up to $14 but most common medium bolognas cleared at $10.50 to $12.50. Calves registered little change. Best veals and choice strong weight slaughter calves brought $16 to $16.50. Stocker and feeder demand was seasonably broad and prices on a i firm basis. Well fleshed feeders sold at $14.50 to $15 with medium to good stockers $13 to $14.25. Still no material change in the hog situation. Limited arrivals of butcher hogs of all weights held firm at $15.75, the ceiling, while sows remained at $15. Feeder pigs were strong to unevenly higher. Odd packages of choice light pigs sold up to $30 a cwt., a new top record. Other pigs, carrying carry-ing more weight, cleared at $20 to $26. Sheep and lambs were steady with good to choice lamlbs selling upward to $15.50. |
