The lecture was . given Tuesday evening, attended byf a large number of local people. Mrs. L. G. Clay introduced, the speaker. Mr. Winn spoke, in part, as follows: 1 "Spiritualism, the most subtle false doctrine of the Devil, is sweeping this country by leaps and bounds," said Evangelist Norman Nor-man Eckman in his address Sunday Sun-day night at the Milford Firemen's hail. "This doctrine is by no means a new doctrine," he continued. "It is as old as sin. However," he added, "modern spiritualism is less than 100 years old." The speaker then gave a brief but graphic account of the begin-ing begin-ing of Spiritualism in the United States. It found its birthplace in Hydesville, New York. The people peo-ple involved were the Fox family, who began to be disturbed by very unusual noises in all parts of the house, such as mysterious noises of moving furniture and uiKunny rappings. (Continued on last page) Evangelist Tells (.Con'.inued from first page) Thcie r.oies continued until Kate, the younger of the two Fox sisters, made intelligent contact A'ith the spirit's rapping by challenging chal-lenging the Spirit with the words, Spliifoot, do as I do!" Then she! rapped several times and the! Spirit responded with the same! number of raps. From this first intelligent contact the girls developed de-veloped a code of rappings between be-tween themselves and the Spirits and thus became active mediums. From that time on this hectic doctrine laid hold upon the attention atten-tion of hundreds of people in Hydesville, many of whom consulted con-sulted the devil through these al-j ready established mediums, the Fox sisters. "From this time on forward this so-called religion has grown and spread over the country in an unprecedented un-precedented way," said Mr. Eckman, Eck-man, "so that today some estimates esti-mates 'place the followers as high as twenty million in this country!" Next Sunay night Mr. Eckman will speak on "The United States In Bible Prophecy." |
