Show v SITUATION J -os seen at the Loslnqeles Union Stock lards Los Angeles Union Stock Yards, May 21 Figures just released by the department of agriculture show that April slaughter of cattle under federal inspection was 4 heavier than in April 1944 and 2 over April 1943. Slaughter of calves, however, was down 17 from March and 14 from April i last year. Hog kill was only 49 j of the l'ecord slaughter for April 1 1944. Sheep slaughter was 13 civilian consumers. During the past week markets were well stocked with cattle but other classes of meat animals were in light supply. Los Angeles drew approximately 9000 cattle for the period, compared with 8324 the previous week and 6820 the corres-, corres-, ponding -week a year ago. At 12 markets 186,300 cattle were re-, ceived, as against 187,602 the pre-1 vious week and 179,187 a year ago.j Cattle (trade displayed some un- j eveness. A comparatively liberal j crop of steers sold largely on an even level, though some of the commoner kinds were slow and mildly easier. Tne practical top was $1'.25, though odd head 1 touched $18. Major end of the fed steers sold at $15 to $16.60. Grass; steers ranged mostly $13.75 to J $15.50, with common Mexicans I down to $11.50 and under. Feeder buyers took quite a few thin steers around $12.75 to $14 with, a few fleshy so-ts up to $15. I Good cows were wanted and' relatively firm, strength develop-; ing in spots but medium and com- j mon grass cows suitable to sell under $11.50 wore dull and uneven-' ly lower, and as much as 50c to! under March but 9 larger than I April 1944. The all-over picture,! based on these- slaughter statistics, j is not calculated to raise hopes for greater supplies of meat for i $1 under the recent high time. Heifers were steady to 25c lower, I the decline on medium and plainer! sorts. Bulls and calves were little changed. Host calves and vealers sold at $15.50 to $16.50. Hogs held fully steady at established estab-lished ceiling levels. Meager supplies sup-plies of butchers sold at $15.75, and sows and stags at $15. A few medium to choice feeder pigs cleared clear-ed at $20 to $25, the latter price on 112 pound weights. Sheep and lambs were slow and prices steady to 25c lower. No lamlbs sold above $14 and indications indica-tions are that $14.50 would be about an outside figure on choice springers. Common to good ewes ranged $5 to ,$7.25 with culls and throwouts $2.25 to $4.50. |
