SIXTH GRADE The First Thanksgiving When the Pilgrims landed on Plymouth Rock, Massachusetts, it was winter and cold. The people thought it was too cold to make houses so they stayed aboard the good old Mayflower. When spring came the Pilgrims chopped down trees and made then a dwelling dwel-ling place and planted crops. The Indians who were not very savage, taught the Pilgrims how to raise corn, pumpkins and potatoes. When autumn came large crops bad been raised. The good Governor Gover-nor Bradford was so happy and pleased with the large yield that he planned to give thanks to the Lord for . the crops He had given them. The plan was accepted and every family got busy making tilings for the celebration. The good Indians were invited to the thanks giving and they brought wild turkey, venison and other things. When the day came for the feast and celebration the food was put on a large table in the woods. There the Pilgrims and Indians ate their first Thanksgiving dinner. We hold tfiese same celebrations every year and on that day remember and honor the Pilgrims and thank the Lord for His blessings to us. Helen Baker. o |
