Show Big Orders Given By Union Pacific The Union Pacific railroad, it was announced this week, has placed orders for 100,000 tons of steel rail and fittings at approximate approxi-mate cost of $4,000,000. Tho order for rail, all of 131 pounds to the yard, amounts to 70,000 tons, and fittings and accessories total 30,000 tons. Appropriation of approximately ap-proximately $2,000,000 also was made for replenishing stocks of ties. Other expenditures for a car building program, a portion of which is already under way, aggregate ag-gregate of further $4,000,000 bringing the total expenditures to almost $10,000,000. The rail which has been purchased pur-chased is all of the heaviest Union Pacific standard and covers the railroad's rail replacement program, pro-gram, of about 340 miles, for the next 18 months. Lumber and materials to the amount of naarly $2,700,000 have already been received for the rebuilding re-building of 1970 box cars and the' installation of Evans auto loading devices in 251 automobile cars which are now being rebuilt. A total of $11,200,000 is also being expended for lumber and other materials for rebuilding a further 500 automobile cars and equipping them with Evans loading devices and for the rebuilding, a total of 377 other box cars. |
