Show ! Improved Variety Of Wheat Offered A greatly improved type of winter wheat recently has been released by the experiment station sta-tion at the Utah State Agricultural Agricul-tural college for general use by farmers in the state. The new variety has been named Wasatch i and is a cross between Ridit and Relief. Its chief merits, according ;to Hyp-urn Steffen, county agricultural agri-cultural agent, is that it is more highly resistant to smut than any other commercially grown wheat, I has a stiff straw that tends to i prevent lodging, is a high yielder and has excellent milling and baking bak-ing qualities. Wasatch is the third wheat released re-leased by the college since the cereal breeding program was first initiated. The first wheat was j named Relief because of its high ! resistance to smut. This variety has largely replaced all others in the winter wheat growing sections of the state and furnished real help in combating smu'ts which annually caused a loss of from 30 to 40 percent. Two smut races found in the state seriously attack Relief and for this reason jt has not been entirely satisfactory. The second wheat to be released was named Cache. It is beardless and highly resistant to smut. This Variety has "been grown to some extent in Beaver county and has proved desirable. Wasatch wheat is resistant to dwarf smut and is also resistant jto all but two of the 27 known I smut races. These two races are not common in .Utah and present no problem at this time. Dwarf i smut is caused by a fungus organism that lives in the coil and no method of treating wheat is effective in its control. The new variety has solved this problem. 'Farmers who plan to seed' an acreage to winter wheat this fall and desire seed of the new variety should contact the county agent. All Wasatch seed available is certified. V |
