At Los Angeles the week's arrivals were about 1200 larger than, the previous pre-vious holiday shortened ptriod bi ; demand was broader than usual and the general market displayed considerable activity and on certain cer-tain classes, particularly cows, quite a little strength. Eastern markets showed a tendency to wilt under the heavy outpouring of grass cattle from the southwest areas, even good to choice fed I steers displaying marked weakness. weak-ness. This tre.-.d, however, was ignored by Los Angeles slaughterers slaughter-ers all of whom appeared in the market with good buying orders. iSteers finished the week on a steady to strong basis, while cows were 25c to 50c higher than in closing rounds of the previous week, virtually all classes from canners up to good beef cows sharing in the improvement. Bulls and calves were strong while there was a fair inquiry for the moderate mod-erate run of replacement stock at around a steady scale of values. A few good 1116 pound fed steers claimed a top of $15.50 and a load of 1120 pound averages brought $15. Stockers and feeders ranged mostly $9 to $11, with a few better grades at $11.25 to $11.50. Medium to good cows bulked at $10 to $11.50, with scattered sales up to $12.50. Cutter to medium, $8.25 to $9.75, and can-ners can-ners mostly $6 to $7.25, with a few shells down to $5 and under. A few best heifers sold at $13.75 to $14.25, with bulk of medium to good grassers $10.50 to $12.65 and odd lots to $13. Medium to good bulls, $9.25 to $10.75; few best bulls $11 to $11.25. Most medium and good calves $12.50 to $14.50; choice up to $15. Hogs continued largely on a ceilingrfixed basis during the week, with a $15.76 top arid! bulk on good choice butchers averaging 1S9- to 240-pounds with heavier weights bunched largely around the $15 mark. Sows, however, were strong to 50c higher. Some good smooth kinds reached $15, with most sales centering at $14.50 to $14.75. Sheep and lambs continued on the downgrade, prices showing further losses of 25c to 50c for the week. Choice lambs were lacking buit nominally, quotable around $13 to $13.50. Medium kinds brought $12.00 to $12.40. Some fairly good shorn ewes cleared at $3.50 to $4.00. |
