Show National Understanding I do not really believe that Great Britain and the United States understand under-stand each other better than do other foreign countries. On the contrary, I feel that we understand each other less, Harold Nicholson writes, In Vanity Van-ity Fair. We In England have a clearer Idea of what Is going on at the back of th French mind, or even of the German mind, than we have of those recondite and rapid emotional processes which constitute the public opinion o America. You in the United States hav often more understanding of the German Ger-man mentaliry than you have of the mentality of Westminster. A month on this continent has taught me one extremely valuable lesson. It has taught me that I understand nothing about the United States whatsoever. |
