Show WESTERN CRITICISM FOUND NOT JUSTIFIED : Couii&e-riiig (to reported civicism of heavy enrollment of forest conservation conser-vation corps workers in eastern states, as compared with the rate of enlistment for Utah, C. N. Woods, assistant regional director of the Un ited StaJos forest service, Monday explained that Utah enlistments exceed ex-ceed a pro rata share of the total of recruits. Besides . this, all "overhead" "over-head" operations are being conducted with labor enrolled from within Die state. "Due to the great difference between be-tween the size and number of eastern east-ern and western forests," said Mr. Woods "it becomes necessary and logical to draw from the large cities of the east for forces to be 9ent to western forests. By 'overhead' operations opera-tions we mean work carried on by experincd men, and of this class 1300 men have been allotted to Utah." Other advantages enjoyed by western west-ern states because of the influx of easterners to carry out the Roosevelt Roose-velt reforestation program, were cited by Mr. Woods as follows: All food, tools, lumber for camp construction, and other supplies are purchased within the states containing contain-ing the workers' camps. Much land will be purchased from private owners for reforestration and also as camp sites for flood and erosion ero-sion control work. The various western states, Utah included, will benefit materially through the flood and erosion control program. I r, |
