Show GOVERNOR DERN IN STRENUOUS BID FOR DEMOCRATIC WIN VISITS MILFORD IN STUMP OF STATE Featuring the political rallies of this week was the visit to Beaver County of Governor George H. Dern and party. The governor, with 0. K. Clay and local candidates, spoke in Minersville, Milford and Beaver. In addressing a big audience here at the Orpheum theatre, the governor choise no particular theme for his talk other than a general advocacy of the Democratic candidates. Differences Differ-ences between the two major political parties were gradually breaking down with the support of the Tariff given by the Democrats, said Gov. Dern. In commenting ujjon Al Smith's candidacy, the governor contended con-tended that the chief issues named by his opponents, liquor, religion and Tammanyism, were r.ot issues and unfair un-fair to the Democratic nominee. He then extolled Smith's record in. New. York. Coming to local issues the attacked at-tacked Republican reasons for wishing wish-ing to unseat Senator King. No personalities per-sonalities were indulged in when he spoke of his own candidacy. He recalled re-called at length the accomplishments of a' Utah legislature of war time, which was largely Democratic. He gave a word of praise to each member mem-ber of the Democratic state ticket, and asked support also for the Democratic judicial ticket. 0. K. Clay, Democratic nominee for the office of attorney-general, pre-ceeded pre-ceeded the governor with a speech. Mr. Clay proved to be a rapid-fire speaker as well as thinker. Other speakers were Grover Giles, Abe Murdock and Grant Tolton, who are- well known locally in this campaign. cam-paign. Ed Wilson, County Chairman, presided pre-sided at the meeting. During an interlude in-terlude in the program, Mr. Wilson gave instructions to the audience on the prevention of spoiling ballots when the voter marks his political preference. Musical numbers were a solo by Mrs. Helen McGarry, by Dan Ferguson, Fergu-son, and songs by a trio of men from Beaver. Meeting Tonight Democratic rallies will be continued continu-ed this week with a rally tonight at the L. D. S. church. Local candidates will jointly contribute the piece de resistance at this meeting. Republicans not Loafing While the Democrats have taken the center of the stage this week with the governor's visit, the Republican organization has not been idle. Judicial Judi-cial and county candidates, have spoken at meetings held over in the east end of the county at North Creek and Sulphurdale, as well as in the farm section south of Milford. In Beaver Monday night there will be a big Republican rally which will feature the efforts of local Republican Republi-can candidates to secure the offices they ar after. |
