RING GAG Magna Deputy sheriff Hanks did a fine peice of work the other day in rounding up a quartet of criminals who have been successful in working the old "stolen ring gag" on hundreds of service stations throughout the country. Deputy Hanks heard of the activities of the crew and set out to watch for them.) They made their appearance at the Four Way Service Station and were arrested there. The other part of the gang was found by Hanks at an early hour in the morning morn-ing at the Utah Auto Camp. Hanks had foun the crooks from a mearger description furnished him by victims of the foursome. The trick worked like this: A well dressed couple in an expensive car would drive up to a service station to get some gas. They would tell the station owner that they had lost a valuable diamond ring a.nd that if he by any chance would hear of it or locate it they would pay him a handsome hand-some reward. The next day or so along would come another couple and tell the owner own-er of the station they found a ring and endeavor to sell it to him. Many times the service station proprietor knowing of the reward offered for the lost ring, and having the address of the persons whom he supposed had lost it would buy the ring for ten or fifteen dollars so as to get the big reward. re-ward. The sad part of the story being that both the ring and the reward, to gether with the address of the owner were all ficticious and the grafters had taken another sucker. |
