Show Priesthood and Relief Society Hold Convention i ! At a convention of all priesthood quorums and relief societies, held in conjunction with the quarterly conference con-ference Saturday and Sunday, all of the wards in the stake were represented. repre-sented. The priesthood met in the ward chapel and the relief society in the high school auditorium. Elder Rulon S. Wells was present as a representative of the general church authorities and Mrs. Annie Wells Cannon represented the general gen-eral board of the relief society. Presi-T. Presi-T. W. Gunn presided at the opening priesthood meeting while the other sessions were under the direction of the various quorums. Clark Murdock presided at the afternoon af-ternoon session. The names of the general and local authorities were presented by president Carl Tolton and unanimously sustained. Wells Murdock gave a history of the seventies, seven-ties, beginning with the time when God appeared to Moses and instructed instruc-ted him to gather together seventy men from among the elders. "Obligations and opportunities of foreign missions," and state missionary mission-ary work" were discussed by Grant Tolton and Hobart G. White. The audience sang "I know that my Redeemer lives." j Mrs. Annie Wells Cannon was delighted de-lighted with the privilege of visiting Beaver. We are all working for the same interests, she declaied. J She reported having found a very fine organization of the stake relief j society and made a plea that the people peo-ple support them so they may be able to carry on their charity work. The relief society women go among the people visiting the sick, caring for the dead and ministering to the needs of the poor- A striking testimony testi-mony was related of having heard as a girl, the mother of apostle Orson F. Whitney, sing and speak in tongues. ton-gues. While Mrs. Whitney was an old woman yet she sang in the voice of a young woman, and when interpreted, inter-preted, the lines were beautiful poetry. poet-ry. Elder Wells said he had greatly enjoyed en-joyed the various programs under the priesthood quorums. President T. W. Gunn said we had received at this conference much information in-formation that will be of great benefit bene-fit in the stake. At the sessions of the relief society soci-ety convention President Susan Murdock Mur-dock presided. Mrs. Murdock gave the opening address of greeting, and gave an excellent report of the things accomplished by the stake officers and board members. This was followed follow-ed by reports from the Beaver east ward by president Emma Smith; the Adamsville ward by Mrs. David Pearce; the Milford society was reported re-ported by Mrs. Mary Johnson, president presi-dent Winnie Miller not being able to attend. President Amy Baker gave a splendid report of the Minersville organization, Mrs. Blackner of the Greenville and president Kate Jensen Jen-sen reported th leaver west ward society. A fine spirit of co-operation was made manifest in the various reports. Mrs. Annie Wells Cannon said a Latter Lat-ter Day Saint woman can go any place in the world and not be ashamed asham-ed but feel proud of being equal to any occasion. Education of the hearts she said, is greater than all other things. We are repaid for even the kind words we speak. Looking after the community does not mean only-charity only-charity work, but civic interest in health and other improvements. The association with others broadens our ideals in life." Other vital topics discussed by Mrs. Cannon included "New plan for visiting visit-ing teacher," "How to co-operate with i county charity department," "Care ! of defective children," "Responsibili-: "Responsibili-: ty and duty of class leaders," and a round table discussion on miscellane-j miscellane-j ous subjects. ! Bishops Miller Farrer and White ! each made brief remarks on the im-i im-i portance of monthly consultation be-i be-i tween bishops and presidents of R. S. I Mrs. Sarah White gave an excellent i talk on "Educational work in- the re-! re-! lief society," and Mrs. Ethel Hutch-in;.-s gave a report on the care of the aged in Beaver stake. A ladies trio pomposed of . Mes-dames Mes-dames Bertha Fernley, Lucile Murdock Mur-dock and Mayme Hoops sang "Sunrise "Sun-rise and You." A special tribute was paid Mrs. Cannon on Saturday afternoon by the singing of "A Rose from God's Garden," Gar-den," words written by Isabelle Ruby Owen and music arranged by Professor Prof-essor E. A. Johnson, for the one hundredth hun-dredth anniversary of the birth of Emmeline B. Wells, mother of Mrs. Cannon. The song was beautifully sung by Mrs. Thelma Barton and Mr-Johnson. Mr-Johnson. In her closing remarks Mrs. Cannon stated that Utah is now the only state in the Union not to have made some preparation for the care of its defective children, the most unfortunate of all people born. The stake presidency were urged to meet with their representatives before election and make an appeal for their support for a measure to be brought up in our next legislature. After a meeting Sunday night under un-der the direction of the lesser priesthood priest-hood the conference was adjourned for three months. |
