Show Texas Hero Honored An imposing granite monument Is being erected in the Episcopal graveyard grave-yard at Richmond, Texas, to the memory of Deaf Smith, Texas rev-lutionary rev-lutionary hero who burned a bridge behind Gen. Sam Houston's army at San Jacinto and forced it to conquer or perish. The memorial will be chisled by Louis Rodriguez, sculptor, who learned his art while shining shoes and selling papers in San Antonio. An-tonio. It will bear a brief account of Smith's life, giving his birth in New York, residence in Mississippi, marriage in New Orleans and daring In Texas. Smith died in 1837, barely a year after his courage helped the state win its independence. |
