Show Washington's Taxes High, Too Overburdened taxpayers may feel their load lightened somewhat by the knowledge that even George Washington, Wash-ington, in a letter written in February Febru-ary 1787, complained about his taxes. H wrote: I have now demands upon me for more than 500, of which 340 is due for the tax of 1786, and I know not where or when I shall receive 1 shilling shil-ling with which to pay it. In the last 2 years I have made no crops and those who owe me money cannot or will not pay it. |
