It acquired its present meaning from the phraso "tawdry laces" a corruption corrup-tion of "St. Audroy laces," sold at St. Audroy'a fair, which was the same as SL Etholrcda'a fair. Etbolreda was quoen of Northumberland and abbess ot Ely and died in tho year 079.
