Show SHELTER BELTS ARE USEFUL Do Much to Prevent 80II Blowing Because Be-cause They Interfere With Movement Move-ment of Wind Nar Surface. In dry farming areas many farmers farm-ers are troubled with soil blowing, sometimes to the extent of losing their entire crop. In many section wster comes within six feet of the surface so that the root of most crops can reach moisture. While there Is a scarcity of water. It seems almoet necessary to follow dry farming farm-ing methods to be successful. In areas where soil blowing oceurs various vari-ous method might be followed to mitigate the bad effects. Hut It is almost Impossible to eliminate them altogether. Shelter belts do much to prevent soil blowing because they Interfere with the movement of the wind near the su.rce of the ground. While It require time fr shelter belt to develop de-velop It la possible to get th same effort by plowing small fields and leaving leav-ing the surface somewhat rough. It has been found that sandy soils blow more easily than heavier soils and those that contain a considerable amount of organic matter. Th practice prac-tice is followed tn some sections after seeding the crop, to plow a furrow at two or three rod Intervals across the field. These counteract th movement move-ment of the air near the surface and will do much to catch drifting toll and prevent more from starting. It I also a good plan to grow a border of corn rather thickly and let It stand. It will act aa a grove or bedge and will prevent, ta a measure, soil blowing |
