Show To Raise Beet Seed at Home According to the Salt Lake Tribune, Tri-bune, a company is to be formed for the purpose of raising sugar beet seed. Formerly, the sugar beet seed used in this country has been imported from Germany, Ger-many, but since the war, we have not been able to obtain any great quantity, as the German Goverment refuses to allow it to be shipped except in exchange for provisions, which it is impossible im-possible for us to send there on account of the blockade maintained main-tained by England. It has therefore there-fore become necessary for the Americans to be able to raise their own beet seed. For some time there have been experiments experi-ments made in the producing of sugar beet seed, but up to a year or two ago, the experiments have been largely failures, and none of them very successful, until it was tried in Utah and Idaho. It is said that for twenty twen-ty years some companies have tried to produce the required quality of sugar beet seed without with-out success. The new company is to have headquarters in Salt Lake City, and the directors will be from as follows: Two from California, two from Utah, two from Colorado, and one from Michigan. As a preliminary step, pedigreed pedi-greed seed must be obtained from Europe, and the company is now trying to secure this seed. The pedigreed seed must be planted the fir3t year and this produces the mother beets. The next year the mother beets are planted plant-ed and these produce the commercial com-mercial beet seed. Last season there were produced about 14,000 bags of beet seed, enough to take care of the crop for both Utah and Idaho. At the recent meeting of the Beet Sugar Manufacturers' Man-ufacturers' Convention held in Salt Lake City, they were surprised sur-prised at what had been accomplished accom-plished locally, and expressed their wish to organize a company to be devoted exclusively to the production of sugar beet seed. It is said that the promoters have stated that expense is not a factor, and the company will be capitalized at $100,000. and that this amount will be raised to $1000,000.00 if necessary.
