Show VICTIMS NOW FACE FAMINE. Cold and Hunger Add to Horrors in Earthquake Stricken District. Rome Ortucchio, southeast of Avezzano. is reported as having at least 2,000 victims, fully half of whom have 'been found buried in the ruins of the cathedrals there. The town has been virtually razed, and now, more than six days after the first shock, sanitary conditions among the living are becoming almost al-most unbearable. The same story comes from other towns in the vicinity from San Ben-edetto, Ben-edetto, with 4.000 of its 4,500 population popula-tion dead; Celano, 2,500 feet up in the moutnains, with 1,000 dead; Pa-term), Pa-term), with only 200 of its 2,000 persons per-sons still alive; Pescino, with 4,000 and more buried, and many other towns. Though many of these places are near Avezzano, the supposed center of the disturbance and the consequent conse-quent relief work, they have been almost al-most inaccessible because of blockaded block-aded roads. The food supplies are reported re-ported as very insufficient and the shelters entirely inadequate. The organized or-ganized rescue work is being pushed with all haste to reach the inhabitants inhabit-ants of these towns in time to prevent pre-vent great loss of life among the survivors. |
