Keferrii.g to the report of the commissioner com-missioner of corporations, the president presi-dent says: "The commissioner finds a condition condi-tion In the ownership of the standing timber of the Tutted States other than the government timber that calls for serious attention The direct Investigation In-vestigation made by the commissioner coveted an area which contains sO per cent of the privately-owned timber tim-ber of the country. "His report shows that one half of tie Umber In thia area Is owned by 200 Individuals and corixiratioiis; that 14 per cent. Is owned by these corporstions. and that there Is very extensive Inter ownership or stock, ss well as other circumstances, all pointing to friendly relations among those who own a majority ot this timber, tim-ber, a relationship which might lead to a combination for the maintenance ot a price that would be very detrimental detri-mental to the public Interest and would create the necessity of removing remov-ing all tariff obetaclee to the free Importations Im-portations ot lumber from other coun-triee" |
