Show have about come to the conclusion that you are one of our pioneer citizens, citi-zens, and If that is the case, you ought to be In a position to know the financial finan-cial condition of the majority of the people who at the present time represent repre-sent IX'lta. and if there ever was a set of people who Is entitled to make a few dollars. It Is our people here. It is not necessary for me to go back and tell of the hardships that the people of Delta have gone through during the past three years, as we are all more or less familiar with them. I disagree with our Mr. Citizen when he says, It seems that all the people here care for Is the almighty dollar. Aa a rule I believe our people are far above th dollar and cents standard, and that l Is an Insult to even attempt to measure meas-ure their purpose In life with the at-mighty at-mighty dollar. The past three years have proven to me beyond a shadow of doubt, that their purpose In life Is far superior to what our Sir. Citizen Intimates. Inti-mates. Mr. Citizen closes his little speech by raying: "Now, don't you, as a people, peo-ple, think It would be much better to get out and help to tlx up some of these streets and beautify our town a! little. The Irrigation Company will I get out and help anil thereby make our town the most beautiful In the County. It Is now nearly the lirst of June and the farmers are still busy preparing the soil and planting It to grain, and It doesn't seem consistent to ask them to leave I heir Held work undone and rome and work on the streets until after the rush of farm Is over, and the props are growing nicely. Then It would be very commendable If the Commercial Club or some body would take It upon themselves to set aside a whole week as a town Improvement week, and when the proper time cornea If I can do anything to help the cause along I will only be too glad to do-so. Very truly yours, ANDItKW C. SOIIKNSON. President of the Town Hoard. FROM THE TOWN BOARD. F.d I tor Chronicle: In your paper dated May 9 appeared an article written by one of our citizens citi-zens who ought to be a booster rather than the biggest sorehead and knocker that ever hail the misfortune to land iu our town. The article which I refer to was entitled "Improve the Town," and signed A Citizen. This article was given the lirst column on the lront page of your paper, which gives one the Impression that you considered con-sidered It the most Important article In your paper. The party who wrote the article must have felt a little guilty Tiie article starts out with, "Why don't the town board or Commercial Club get busy and propose something to help beautify our town." The town board of Delta has been In existence ex-istence for some five months, and dur- ' lug this time we have passed a number num-ber of ordinances regulating our town ! Borne of these ordinances will very materially assist in making Delta :i j very beautiful city. Hut, of course, as I til broad and liberal-minded people j sill understand, a tow n Isn't as a rule milt with all the modern conveniences i f a large city In one day, one month, r with hot air for that matter. The t inly meuns that the town board has lad to finance its affairs to date have jeeii the few small licenses which It i las Leen able to collect, and some of r hose who have been called upon to t lay a small merchandise license and v iccupatlon tax have very grudgingly lone so. We have hud to buy books v 0 keep our records on, a town seal 1 ml other urtlcles which was a lino- ( utely necessary for us to have. The t iioneys received to date will barely t over the expenses up to the present t I me. Again, Mr. Citizen says: i "The irrigation season is on and ( jok at the condition of the ditch In a own, what do they look like? Do they w ok like they belonged to a Ihrilty, ( rowing town, or do they look as (-hough (-hough they belonged to some back- a .oods town that was not on the map?" a low, Mr. Citizen, are you aware of the a set that the town of I)elta doesn't a n these ditches, but that these P Itches and the water that flows lirough them are controlled and linan ed by the Melville Irrigation Com- C any, and no doubt you are a stock- ii oi ler ot the Melville Irrigation Com- tl any. Granting that you are a stock-older stock-older of the Melville Irrigation Com any, we presume by the tone of your titirg that you would be highly lated If you would wake up some ml lornlng and find an assessment levied w f $2 or $.t per share on the water t lock of the Melville Company. How- u ver, tar the benefit of the public I . Ill say, the town lutard has drawn oi ie attention of the Melville Com- n any to the condition" of their water tt rstem In cmr town, and we have been tl umired that this would have their m imiediate attention. e: Again, our Mr. Citlxen almost $ ledi tear when he ys, "No M- ;1 alks, no public improvement of any ri ind It peetn as thoi.gh all the j-eo- le here cared for Is to get the al- c Ighty dollar and they don't eye for vi ly'hlng else" S'n, Mr. Ci'lren, do ? knnm that I |
