Show There's only one man you can always please by not advertising that's your competitor. Our State Department with its "last note" is running a close second to Sara Bernhart's record re-cord for "farewell tours." Politicians express surprise at the strength Henry Ford is developing de-veloping as a presidential candidate, candi-date, still it should have been anticipated that owners of jitney jit-ney cars would vote for him. One might well believe from the President's latest little note to Germany and his statement to Congress, that he had found one of the Col's left over big sticks and aimed a whack at the Kaiser therewith. We are now interestedly inter-estedly waiting to learn whether he landed on William's helmet, or only succeeded in dusting the bosom of the latter's riding breeches. Thoughtful citizens will give serious consideration to the President's Pres-ident's statement to Congress and to his note to the German government, which is virtually an ultimatum. The tragedies of Germany's undersea war are very terrible, and Germany avows that war is to be made terrible to the end that victory may be more swift and sure. All this is repellent to the humanitarian humani-tarian instincts of a nation at peace, and exasperating when it involves disregard of the rights and sacrifice of the lives of our own people. But the thought of being drawn into and becoming a party to the horrible slaughter now going on in Europe is also repellent. Again, one wonders why the destruction of American life by Germany is to be looked upon as worse than the same action by Mexico. The former, at least, is merciful in its de; struction of life, in so far as may be, and has not resorted to torture tor-ture and barbarian practices oi rapine. And still again in this connection the vote of Nebraska and Michigan for Henry Ford, - . who makes peace his hobby, it worthy of thoughtful study. Ford himself is reported to have never taken his candidacy seriously, ser-iously, while his first, if not hi; only, recommendation for tht high office is his earnest, thougl somewhat misdirected efforts to ward peace. Nevertheless, twe great states, and very Americar states at that, seem to favor hin as the candidate for one of th leading political parties. Wouk this not seem to indicate, that i very respectable number o Americans doubt whether we an traveling the right road? |
