Show THIS IS THE PLACE By Maguerite Cameron A Book Review-There Review-There are two books with almost exactly the same title: "This Is the Place Utah," by Maurine Whipple, and "This Is the Place" by Marguerite Cameron. Do not confuse the one with the other. Miss Whipple's book was reviewed last week in the Chronicle. Today, the space will be given to Miss Cameron's book. Miss Cameron's book is carefully written, sources of information are verified, and weighed to determine deter-mine if competent for quoting, and, if quoted, thai the use will be acceptable to readers. The book shows care. It shows thought. There . is no flippancy, no intruding of self. Each statement is critically viewed before use. No ear, no matter how sensitive, finds offence. The historial facts are ably presented, without color, nor hiding of essentials. essen-tials. I certainly enjoyed the book, and feel well repaid re-paid to have freshened memory with its material. With the approach of Utah's Centennial coming next year,, there is much reading, dusting off of old history, and new avidly perused; so that the demand de-mand has been anticipated, and many books put out, some merely advertising, whatever the outward out-ward appearance may be. Some are good, some are mediocre. Miss Cameron's book is one of the few really good volumes on the State. There are books that are for a once-over, then to be tucked away, and maybe read no more. There are other books one files away carefully after reading, read-ing, as reference volumes, to be consulted as occasion occa-sion demands. Miss Cameron's book is one of that sort. A lasting book worth while. There is need for all of us to'be familiar with history his-tory acccurate history. We forget so easily, and error is apt to creep in, no matter how well read a person may think he or she is. Is it weU then at times tim-es to rehearse events, and with care, to fix all one is capable of in mind, and retain it. A source authority au-thority like Miss Cameron's book is for that end. Primarily intended for the young, Miss Cameron's Camer-on's book is also adapted to adults. I can highly recommend it. It can be got in the Delta Public Library. |
