G Peterson President of I Ithe Ithe the Agricultural Coll College ge of Utah says Sugar beet culture has a great social significance in this area Millions Millions Millions Mil Mil- lions of dollars have been invested in the development of or the sugar beet industry in the intermountain country Five factories operate within the he border of the state of I Utah Sixty thousand acres of suI sugar su- su I gar beets are needed to sustain I these plants on a basis of pro profitable profit profit- nt- nt i able operation The labors required ed to produce these beets to process pro pro- pro pro-i I I cess them and market the direct products and the products by-products which are collateral to the industry's operations particularly with the production of livestock which they I support are arc a lucrative blessing blessingto to the communities in which they I I exist More people are able to find employment more people are able to live comfortably on a given J acrea acreage e of land than would otherwise otherwise other other- wise vise be possible These communities communities communities are arc blessed with better roads better homes better schools better better better bet bet- ter public buildings and better general general general gen gen- eral social conditions than those that are not so favored Material evidences of these facts may be had in visiting the communities where agricultural industries are developed and then visiting those where they have none Even though thought the latter may have good soil soli equally abundant water and equal intelligence of citizenship you will find a marked difference It is of great importance therefore that p we sustain to the limit our a agricultural tural Industries for social as well as economic reasons And we should remember there is need for sugar both at home and on the fighting lighting front Sugar is a war crop almost equal to munitions tanks and planes Let us not neglect sustaIning sus sus- taming our home sugar industry |
