Show Delta Will Hold City Elections Tuesday, Nov. 6 Delta will hold city election on Tuesday, Nov. 6, it was anounced today by city officials. Although no one has filed for office, and the present city council has no opposition, elections will be held. This is in line with the opinion given Tuesday by Att. Gen. Clinton Clin-ton D. Vernon, who pointed out that there is no legal authorization that would permit incumbent city officials or anyone else to say there can be no city eelction. Whether opposed or not, he said, the officials of Utah's cities and towns have a legal and moral obligation ob-ligation to see that elections are held. He stated further that the law requires that elections be held it is the basis of our democratic system of government, and failure to hold elections deprives the people peo-ple of the right to utilize their franchise, if only to name write in candidates. Delta, Woods Cross and Alton were listed as three cities that were not contemplating an election elec-tion this year because present city officials had no formal opposition. In foregoing elections, Mr. Vernon said, the practice may cast a serious ser-ious doubt upon the validity of the actions of some city officials who will be put in the position of perpetuating themselves in office of-fice because in their official capacity cap-acity they provided the people with no opportunity to elect any successors. Delta did comtemplate foregoing city elections, as there was no opposition op-position to present incumbents, and it was thought city funds would be saved thereby . However, in view of the Att. Gen.'s opinion, Delta citizens may cast their ballots bal-lots on Tuesday, Nov. 6. |
