Show I CombineKinds Of Lighting, Engineer Says Too little fluorescent lighting often is worse than none at all, says O. JD. Westerberg of the electrical elec-trical engineering department of Northwestern University. Writing in American Builder magazine, he explains that usually no kitchen or laundry is too small for two 40-watt fluorescent tubes in shielded fixtures. Westerberg says, "In new homes or in existing residences where kitchens are being modernized, mod-ernized, efficient lighting should be given as much consideration as other time-saving appliances. The cost is an insignificant percentage per-centage of the modernization cost as a whole." He says that when two 40-watt fluorescent lights are combined with lighting specifically arranged for the kitchen sink and counter areas, necessary illumination for true color discrimination normal-. normal-. ly is provided. A small amount of fluorescent lighting with no incandescent in-candescent lighting to supplement it gives a feeling of untrue color values to most foods and fabrics, the engineer adds. "Warmth in the home is suggested sug-gested by combining incandescent recessed sources with long, slender, slen-der, fluorescent tubes," Westerberg Wester-berg writes. "Combining these components In a practical manner man-ner is functional and attractive.1 "Nor is it too difficult to make lighting for the home come with-j in the reach of an average pocket-1 book. Withproper planning, these lighting effects are an integral; part of the architectural features of the various rooms." j He says the color of fluorescent light is particularly suitable fori kitchens, bathrooms and laundries laun-dries because of the predomi-1 nence of white surfaces and light-1 colored finishes in those areas, j Fluorescent tubes give higher light output with lower power consumption, the engineer ex-1 plains. ' Referring to the kitchen, he says, "The higher efficiency of fluorescent lighting makes it pos- I sible to get as much light at every work center as you do by the I window." j |
